How it is calculated (Hanafi fiqh)

  • Nisab: gold 7.5 vori (87.48 g), silver 52.5 vori (612.36 g). If only gold is owned, the gold nisab applies; if gold is owned together with cash, silver or trade goods, zakat is due once their total value reaches the silver nisab.
  • Zakat of 2.5% of all zakatable wealth is due at the end of one Hijri (lunar) year counted from the day the nisab was first owned. Ups and downs during the year do not matter if the nisab is present at its start and end.
  • All gold and silver, including jewellery in use, is zakatable (Hanafi view). One’s home, personal car, furniture and business equipment are not; goods held for sale are.
  • Debts payable now are deducted. Long-term loans (such as a home loan), doubtful receivables, partnerships, provident funds and pensions involve differences of opinion and detailed rulings — please consult an experienced mufti.
  • This calculator is an aid, not a fatwa. To be sure, please speak to the institution’s scholars.

Example

With BDT 250,000 in cash and bank, debts now due of BDT 30,000, and silver at BDT 2,500 per vori: nisab = 52.5 × 2,500 = BDT 131,250; net wealth of BDT 220,000 exceeds it, so after a full year zakat = 220,000 × 2.5% = BDT 5,500. (Prices are examples only.)
